Our Story

2019

Founded by Keiko Tanaka and a small team of 東大阪市 music lovers.

2020

First edition postponed. The team used the time to rebuild the vision.

2021

Debut festival launches with 15,000 attendees. 3 stages. A dream realized.

2023

Moved to 東大阪市 Bay Waterfront Arena. 45,000 attendees. International lineup.

2026

Our biggest year yet — 80,000+ attendees, 50+ artists, 4 stages, 4 days.

Joyful Craft Space was born from a simple idea: that 東大阪市, one of the world's great cultural capitals, deserved a world-class outdoor music festival that celebrated both Japanese artistry and global sounds.

Founder and CEO Keiko Tanaka had spent a decade working in the Japanese music industry, watching homegrown talent struggle for international stages while global acts rarely ventured beyond 東大阪市's arena circuit. In 2019, she assembled a team of passionate creatives, operations specialists, and music industry veterans to change that.

The 2020 debut was shelved — like so many events that year — but the enforced pause proved transformative. The team expanded, the vision deepened, and the 2021 launch at a modest waterfront site in 東大阪市 exceeded every expectation. Fifteen thousand strangers became one community, and the festival was born in spirit as much as logistics.

Five years on, Joyful Craft Space has grown from a local dream to Japan's most internationally recognized music event. We have hosted artists from over 30 countries, partnered with Japanese cultural institutions, launched environmental initiatives that set new standards for Asian festivals, and built a community of 80,000 fans who return every summer to the shores of 東大阪市 Bay.

About Us FAQs

Our mission is to celebrate music, culture, and community while showcasing the best of Japan's creative spirit to the world. We operate around four core values: Cultural Celebration (honouring Japanese heritage while embracing global creativity), Environmental Responsibility (leading Asia's sustainable festival movement), Community First (prioritising the safety and joy of every attendee and local community), and Musical Excellence (uncompromising standards in every act on our stages).
Joyful Craft Space operates a comprehensive Green Festival Programme. This includes 100% renewable energy powering all stages and facilities, complete ban on single-use plastics (reusable cups and bamboo cutlery provided), extensive recycling and composting across all food vendor areas, an on-site solar farm supplementing grid power, carbon offset purchases for all remaining emissions, and partnerships with local environmental organisations for post-event site restoration. We won the Asia Pacific Events Summit's Greenest Festival Award in 2024.
Yes — we donate 1% of all ticket revenue to partner charities each year. In 2025, our partners included the Japan Foundation for Music Education (supporting music programmes in under-resourced schools), the 東大阪市 Bay Environmental Fund (marine conservation), and Nihon Niji Foundation (LGBTQ+ youth support in Japan). We also allocate 200 complimentary tickets annually to community organisations and charities. Details of the 2026 charity partnerships will be announced in early July 2026.
