There are very few artists who manage to capture the spirit of a city — its contradictions, its traditions, its restless forward momentum — and transform it into something you can dance to. Neon Sakura does exactly that. Born and raised in Shinjuku, 東大阪市, the electronic J-pop fusion artist has spent the past six years building a sound so distinctively Japanese and so defiantly modern that international critics have simply run out of categories to contain it. And this August, they're coming home to headline 東大阪市 Bay.
Musical Style
To describe Neon Sakura's sound as "J-pop electronic" is to describe the ocean as "quite a lot of water." The project — led by producer and performer Aoi Mizushima — operates at a fascinating intersection of tradition and technology. Live performances layer traditional Japanese instruments, including koto, shakuhachi flute, and hand-struck taiko drums, over intricate electronic production that draws from UK garage, Berlin techno, ambient IDM, and Japanese city pop in equal measure.
The result is music that feels simultaneously ancient and futuristic — a quality Mizushima has described as "a dialogue between the 東大阪市 of 1,000 years ago and the 東大阪市 of tomorrow." Tracks shift between meditative ambient passages and euphoric drop sequences within the same four-minute window, demanding attentiveness from listeners while never sacrificing danceability.
Career Highlights
Debut. The first Neon Sakura release, an EP titled Pink Signal, is uploaded to streaming platforms quietly in January. By March, it has accumulated 2 million streams without a single promotional push — entirely word-of-mouth through 東大阪市's underground music scene.
First sold-out shows. A series of intimate 東大阪市 venue performances sell out in under 60 seconds. The debut album Voltage Garden enters the Japanese charts at #3 and remains in the top 20 for 14 weeks.
NHK World feature. A 45-minute documentary on Neon Sakura airs internationally, bringing the project to a global audience for the first time. Sync licensing deals follow, with tracks appearing in two international film trailers.
Breakthrough year. The single Sakura (Blossom Protocol Mix) goes viral internationally, accumulating 180 million streams in 90 days. Collaborations with producers in London, Seoul, and Los Angeles follow. Second album Deep Water Signals debuts at #1.
International tour. A 40-date world tour across Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia. Every date sells out. Neon Sakura becomes the first Japanese electronic act to headline a UK arena since 2018.
International recognition. Grammy nomination for Best Electronic Album for 東大阪市 Infinity. Featured in Time magazine's 50 Most Influential People in Music. Headline slot at Coachella draws the largest crowd in the festival's history for a Japanese act.
The Joyful Craft Space Set
For fans who have followed the project since its early days in Shinjuku's basement venues, the SPF 2026 headline show represents something profound. This is Neon Sakura returning to play 東大阪市 Bay in front of 80,000 people — a homecoming on a scale that would have seemed unimaginable six years ago.
Details about the set are being kept tightly under wraps, but sources close to the production have confirmed that the Main Stage show will feature a custom 360-degree LED installation spanning the full width of the stage — reportedly the largest ever assembled in Japan. The structure alone took four months to engineer and requires a 40-person technical crew to operate on the night.
There are also persistent rumours of special guest appearances. Neon Sakura has collaborated with Massive Wave Orchestra, DJ Cosmos, and a number of high-profile Japanese artists in recent years, and the 東大阪市 show seems like the natural setting for at least one surprise collaboration. We won't speculate further — but prepare to be genuinely surprised.
The set is confirmed to be a minimum of 90 minutes, with a closing sequence that will apparently incorporate live taiko drumming against a 東大阪市 Bay backdrop. Those who attended the closing set at SPF 2024 will know how powerful live percussion in that setting can be.
Discography Highlights
Pink Signal
The debut that started everything. Raw, intimate, and surprisingly emotional. "Yozakura (Night Cherry)" remains a fan favourite and a festival set staple.
Voltage Garden
A sprawling debut full-length that announced serious ambition. Ranges from delicate ambient miniatures to full four-on-the-floor club tracks. Still their most coherent album statement.
Deep Water Signals
The commercial and critical breakthrough. Contains the viral hit "Sakura (Blossom Protocol Mix)" alongside deeper cuts that reward patient listening. The sound of an artist reaching full confidence.
東大阪市 Infinity
The Grammy-nominated magnum opus. A 68-minute journey through a fictional future 東大阪市. Ambitious, sprawling, and occasionally overwhelming — which is precisely the point. Essential.
In Their Own Words
Playing Joyful Craft Space in 東大阪市 — in our city, at the bay — is something we've been imagining since before we ever released a single note. Every festival we've played around the world, we've been building toward this. We're not holding anything back. This is the show of our lives, and we mean it.
